Hailing The Acharya — Let The Mind Back The Voice

Dear Fellow-Bhagavathas,

Many of us who actively participate in temple festivals, Thirunakshathram celebrations of the Azhwars and Acharyas or perform Thiruvaaraadhanam at home, as a matter of routine, recite the traditional Vaazhi Thirunaamam (Hail Poems) on Swami Desika. Little do we realise the import of these eulogies, even after reciting them countless times.

Composed by the Acharya’s son Kumara Varadacharya and disciple Brahma-thanthra Swathanthra Jeeyar, these are tributes not merely for the sake of them but have significant connotation to various feats and anecdotes associated with them in Swami Desika’s life. Though it is not essential to know the meaning of what we recite, it would certainly add to the experience if the utterance is backed by knowledge.

It is pertinent here to note that there are umpteen instances in our legends to show that chanting of the Vedas, Srimath Ramayanam, Divya Prabandham, hymns or the Lord’s names with or without the knowledge of the meaning will bestow benediction. But we know from experience that we derive great joy when the chanting is associated with awareness of the context.

The original idea was to write on the subject just ahead of the forthcoming Thirunakshathram of our illustrious Acharya. However, since it is four months from now, vitality is preferred to topicality and this Note houses the concise meaning of the Vaazhi Thirunaamam.

Vaazhi Thirunaamam on Swami Desika

(Brahma-thanthra Swathanthra Jeeyar)

“I salute the great Venkatanatha, the Master of Philosophy, who is adorned by knowledge and austerity and who is a recipient of the grace of Sri Ramanuja.”

(Kumara Varadacharya)

“Hail the Guru of Vedantha who prospers with the blessings of Athreya Ramanujacharya (known as Appullaar); hail the efficacy with which he presented Sri Ramanuja’s Sri Bhashyam and Nammazhwar’s Thiruvoymozhi.”

(Kumara Varadacharya)

“Hail the one who conquered the fake philosophies and established Sri Ramanuja’s Visishtaadvaitha unequivocally!”

“Hail the one who warmed the heart of the ever-famous Sri Perumputhur-born (Ramanuja)!”

“Hail the one who pleased the Lotus Dame (and received the title ‘Sarva-thanthra Swathanthra’)!”

“Hail the one who always had in his heart the meaning of Thirumangai Azhwar’s (six) Prabandhams!”

“Hail the one who clearly enunciated the rich and authentic Tamil Vedas known as ‘Divya Prabandham’!”

“Hail the one who was born as the great Bell of the Lord of the Seven Hills!”

“Hail the one who handed us the Doctrine of Prapaththi, the great means (through masterpieces like ‘Srimath Rahasya-thraya Saaram’)!”

“Hail Venkatanatha of Thooppul who is a Master of excellent Tamil!”

(Brahma-thanthra Swathanthra Jeeyar)

“May the whole world thrive; may the four Vedas prosper; may the Vedas of Nammazhwar (and the other Azhwars’ – that is Divya Prabandham) reign in the great City of Srirangam! O, Vedantha Desika of Thooppul who adorns the lineage of great Acharyas! May you live for one more century!”

(Brahma-thanthra Swathanthra Jeeyar)

“Hail the Acharya of Nigamantha who hails from the beautiful Thooppul; hail his lotus feet; hail the harmless assembly of good-natured devotees who keep celebrating his spotless flower feet!”

Hope the above will help in recalling the meaning alongside the chanting and enhance our experience of singing the praise of the great Acharya.

(Kumara Varadacharya)

“This is the day which signalled (Swami Desika’s) streamlining of Sri Bhaashyam, the masterpiece of Sri Ramanuja, who is an incarnation of Aadhi Sesha.

This is the day which beckoned the arrival of great works (by Swami Desika) on the Tamil Prabandhams of Nammazhwar.

This is the day which clarified the state of ‘Brahmam’ by getting rid of the illusion involving ‘bheddha’ and ‘abhedha’ Sruthis, through reconciliatory aphorisms (in the form of Sri Bhaashyam).

This is the day (Swami Desika) launched into offence with ‘Satha Dhushani’ and quelled the challenge of the debaters.

This is the day which announced the clinical conquest of pretenders and bad elements (by Swami Desika).

This is the day which augured spreading of the glory of Sri Bhaashyam to all corners.

This is the day in which rose the genius of an Acharya of philosophy.

This is the Great Day, that is, Purattaasi-Thiruvonam.”

Meet you in the next Note.

Natteri P. Srihari (a) Lakshmi Narasimhacharyar
