'My Eyes Will See Nothing But Arangan'

Dear Fellow-Bhagavathas,

We shall experience in this Note, Amalanaadhi Piraan, ThirupPaan Azhwar’s exquisite and animated narration of the splendor of Lord Ranganatha’s form. The fact that Swami Desika has authored a commentary ‘Munivaahana Bhogam’ for this, adds to its grandeur.

ThirupPaan Azhwar was born on a Kaarthikai-Rohini day in the Divyadesam ThirukKozhi (known as Thiru Uraiyur) near Srirangam, as a manifestation of the Lord’s Srivathsam. His devotion and love for Arangan is legendary as can be seen from this special Prabandham of just 10 verses.

The description starts with Ranganatha’s Lotus feet and inches upwards to reach a crescendo in His crown in the penultimate Paasuram. The Azhwar concludes by employing a sweet metaphor, calling the Lord ‘ambrosia’ and avers that his eyes would see nothing after the ‘Arangan Anubhavam’. Here we go.

  1. Amalanaadhi Piraan - On Lotus Feet
  2. அமலனாதி பிரான் அடியார்க்கென்னை ஆட்படுத்த

    கமலபாதம் வந்து என் கண்ணினுள்ளன ஒக்கின்றதே.

The pure and primordial Lord made me sub-servient to His devotees. He is the king of Nithyasooris and resident of Thiruvenkatam surrounded by fragrant groves. He is plain, unblemished and the just ruler of Srivaikuntamand the Lord of the tall-walled Thiruvarangam. O, it seems His auspicious lotus feet have found their way into my eyes!

  3. Uvandha Ullaththanaay - On Red Attire

Merrily He measured the world hitting through the universe. He is the distinguished Lord with long hair, who, in yore, as Kaakustha, killed the opposing demons with His spiteful arrows. He is the Lord of Thiruvarangam surrounded by fragrant groves. My mind drifted over the red attire around His waist!

The serpent-reclining Lord of Thiruvarangam stood worshipped by Nithyasooris in the monkey-hopping, northern Thiruvenkatam hills. My soul goes towards His beautiful navel that created Brahma, atop the sunset-hued attire

    உண்ட கண்டம் கண்டீர் அடியேனை உய்யக்கொண்டதே!

    பெரியவாய கண்கள் என்னைப் பேதைமை செய்தனவே.

The first-cause Lord who is inaccessible even to the Devas, tore into the body of the hefty Hiranya Kasipu. That pure Lord resides in Thiruvarangam and on His face lie a pair of dark, wide, glowing, red-lined eyes. O, those eyes have had me baffled!

    நீலமேனி ஐயோ! நிறை கொண்டதென் நெஞ்சினையே.

The cloud-cued Lord is the one who stole butter as a cowherd-boy, stole my heart too. He is the Lord of Gods and the resident of the beautiful Thiruvarangam. My eyes, after seeing my delicious ambrosia, will see nothing else!
