The Azhwar Who Held His Acharya As God

Dear Fellow-Bhagavathas,

Azhwars are divine incarnations of different divine entities associated with Lord Sriman Narayana. The principal objective of such Avatharas is to enable us to get rid of our ignorance by realising the greatness of the Lord and the fact that He is our sole refuge in putting an end to the miseries of the vicious cycle of births and deaths. Surrendering unto Him is the only viable recourse in fulfilling that goal. This has been amply established by the Azhwars in their exquisitely sweet works collectively known as Nalayira Divya Prabandham drawing from the Vedas, Upanishads, Smruthis, Ithihasas, Puranas, Agamas, etc.

For ready reference, the Azhwars and their respective incarnations in terms of the divine attributes are given below:

Poygai Azhwar – the Conch, Bhuthath-Azhwar – Mace, Peyazhwar – Sword, Thirumazhisai Azhwar – Discus, Nammazhwar – Vishvaksena, Madhurakavi Azhwar – Ganaadhipa by name Kumudha, Kulasekhara Azhwar – Kousthubha, Periyazhwar – Garuda, Andal – Bhu Devi, Thondar AdipPodi Azhwar – Vaijayanthi Vanamaalika, ThirupPaan Azhwar – Sri Vathsam and Thirumangai Azhwar – Bow.

Of these 12 Azhwars, the status of two — Andal and Madhurakavi — is intriguing. The former — the lone female Azhwar, born as the daughter of Periyazhwar — gave us the great ThirupPaavai and Nachchiyaar Thirumozhi, and attained the Lord in wedlock, is also Goddess Herself. The latter — who held only his Acharya Nammazhwar as God, proclaimed that he knew nothing else than his master and sang ‘KanniNun Siru-Thaambu’ on the Azhwar — can be deemed as an ‘outsider’ in the strictest sense of the term ‘Azhwar’ for the simple reason that he was not into the conventional devotion (to the Lord).

In our ‘Sri Sampradaya’ tradition, the Acharya enjoys an exalted position, even greater than that of the Lord Himself. That’s the reason why Krishna chose to assume the role of an Acharya and preached Gita to Arjuna.

In this Note, we shall remember Madhurakavi Azhwar through his sweet Prabandham ‘KannioNun Siru-Thaambu’ as his Thirunakshathram (Chithtirai-Chithirai) falls on April 18.

Legend has the following episode which shows the greatness of ‘KanniNun Siru-Thambu'.

Many would be aware that it was Nathamunigal who retrieved Nalayira Divya Prabandham from non-existence. He once went to ThirukKudandhai where the decad ‘Aaraavamudhe’ (5-8) from Thiruvoymozhi which was in praise of the Lord there was being recited. He heard the reference “this 10 in a thousand” in the 11th and final verse and asked the devotees about the rest of the thousand. They told him that they had no idea and they only knew these 11 verses and were reciting only them. Nathamunigal then referred to ‘Kurugur Satagopan’, in the same verse and enquired if they knew where this Kurugur was.

On the cue given by them, he proceeded to ThirukKurugur where he met a descendant of Madhurakavi Azhwar from whom he learned ‘KanniNun Siru-Thambu’. Upon blessings from Nammazhwar, he recited it a 12,000 times. Nammazhwar manifested before him and he not only taught Nathamunigal Thiruvoymozhi but the entire Divya Prabandham and the meaning.

Thus, KanniNun Siru-Thambu, which extols the greatness of the Acharya (Nammazhwar here), is considered very auspicious and powerful as it was instrumental in rediscovering Divya Prabandham and putting it back in vogue. Reciting the same many a time whenever possible will stand us also in good stead and shower us with the grace of Nammazhwar.

May Madhurkavi Azhwar reign in my heart! He enjoyed singing Satakopa’s great works only and he knew nothing else. Due to this nature of Madhurakavi’s, Satakopa became his only god.

“I know nothing else but the prince of beautiful Kurugur, Maran, who rendered the Vedas into Tamil. He alone is my life and breath.” Madhurakavi, who praised his master Satakopa thus, is our ruler and savior.

KanniNun Siru-Thaambu

The wonder-child my Lord was held on a spinous leash of rope. But more, the mouth is nectar-welled when Kurugur Nambi’s name is spelled.

I spelled his name and found my joy; I served his feet and found the truth. I know no other god. I sing his songs and keep roaming.

I roam but everywhere I see my Lord’s dark charming face. Through service to the king of Kurugur, this lowly-self has found his grace.

Worthy and graceful scholars of the four Vedas had found me worthless in my ways. Butt father, mother both-in-one, Satakopa now rules my days.

The days I envied others’ pelf and sought the love of lurid dames! Now I have the lord Himself, who is king of the famed city Kurugur.

The Kurugur-mansioned city’s king has made me sing his praise by rote. Henceforth, he shall never fail me, note!

My Kari-Maran took a note of Karmas my older days. I shall let the world know, of the grace of Satakopa of quality Tamil.

For those who worship grace alone, he showered it in plenty by singing the thousand songs studded with meanings of the Vedas. There cannot be a bigger grace.

The deep sense of Vedic thought, he sang in song and taught my heart. Satakopa my Lord is love and the only reward for me is serving him.

Even the useless and worthless souls, he (Satakopa) will reform put to use. O, Lord of Kurugur where cuckoos haunt, I only seek to love your feet.

To those who seek the Lord’s feet, Madhurakavi who took refuge in southern Kurugur Nambi’s feet has this to say, “See Vaikuntam right here!”

Meet you in the next Note.
